The pavement market in front of Mysore zoo has mainly shops selling toys and dolls.

Artwork at doorfront

Traditionally such artwork, called Kolam/Rangoli, was done using rice flour. The idea, presumably, was to feast ants and flour-eating insects on festive occasions when people decorate their door-fronts with their artwork. The photo was taken from the third-floor sit-out in our Mysore apartment block.

My Mysore

Pavement is home for these little ones ; they belong to families always on the move from one town to another, pitching their tents on sidewalks. They are mostly gypsies. Some families are, what I would call, economic nomads - craftsmen and artisans who have problem selling their wares. They move from place to place chasing fresh markets for their wares - pottery, decorative pieces, painted dolls and things. I caught up with these kids on a pavement close to the Mysore railway station. Presumably, their parents had just moved in, for a working stint in Mysore.

A quiet little town

Dhali is a one-street town on way to Thirumurthi Hills. We passed through this quiet little habitation amid acres of farmland growing mainly coconut.

At the Sai Baba temple my wife discovered in our Chennai neighbourhood, to which we recently shifted our residence from Mysore.

A red lineup

Public transport buses, requisitioned by the election authorities, are lined up on a school campus in Mysore, where the staff assigned to polling booths in various parts of the district assembled to be taken to their designated booths. Took this photo during the Karnataka panchayat elections some months back.

Selfless soul

He is an ordinary person with a mission extraordinary. A retired govt. official K R Gurukar has passion for planting saplings on city sidewalks. He has been doing it on a daily basis for the last decade or more. He plants honge, a species suited to Mysore. Goats and stray cows don't fancy honge leaves, he says.

News stand

A make-shift news stand at our bus station in Mysore. The news-vendor is generous enough to let the bus crew have a look-in at the morning papers between trips.

'Puja' time

It is puja time at Ramavilas Road Ramar temple,to which my wife is a visitor every morning. This photograph is credited to her. Taken in by pujari Gururaj's dedication, she sought permission to photograph him while offering prayers to Hanuman. Gururaj, a student of Mysore Sanskrit College, volunteers at the temple during off-class hours, morning and evening.

Palace lights

Mysore Palace is lit up for an hour on weekend nights for the benefit of tourists. The young tourists in the picture are my California based grandsons, on a recent visit to spend time with us.

Mad about cars.

Whenever we take a ride together in his dad's car,grandson Sidharth and I play this 'name-the-brand' game, every time a vehicle speeds by on road. I rarely get a word in edgeways. His play-room is littered with car toys. His parents have no hassle persuading him to have a haircut at this place in Pleasaton CA. I took this shot during a 2008 trip to US, when Sidharth was nearly three.

Test-tube baby centre

Noticed this place on my recent visit to Coimbatore .Though I knew this city is known for its speciality hospitals, I wasn't aware of its test-tube baby centre.
It is an irony that Calcutta's Subhas Mukerji,the scientist who delivered India's first test-tube baby in 1978 died unsung. His achievement met with societal disapproval. A newspaper then reported that Mukerji received nothing but brickbats and humiliations from his colleagues and the West Bengal government, which even did not allow him to publish his data in scientific journals and refused permission to travel abroad for presenting his data.

On Chamundi Hill
