Country life

Goats parking themselves on road, rain water on the mud patch, a vintage house and a leisurely pace reflect life in a Tamil Nadu village.

Breakfast time

They hang out for breakfast in front of a bakery in Mysore. This early morning scene is played out daily as Raghavendra Bakery on Devaraja Urs Road opens for business. The crows wait for crumbs tossed out at them as the bakery staff clean the shelves for holding freshly made bread and cake, and other eats.

Marketplace

The sturdy beast pulling a cartload of materials is poised to cross the road at T Narsipura. We happened by this marketplace on way to Somanathpura in Karnataka.

Mysore tonga

Cart-driver and his horse find welcome relief in the shade from the punishing heat during summer. Horse-drawn two-wheeler, called 'tonga', is a vanishing mode of transport on Mysore streets.

Lonely walk home

Parted from its flock a lonely sheep is left out on the road to fend for itself. Took this photo on a pilgrimage to Thirukkadiyur, a temple town in Tamilnadu.

Resident monkey

This chap on the front gate was a monkey in residence in our Mysore apartment complex. And he isn't half as innocent as he looks. When these guys gang up and move about in the complex they were a menace to residents. You got to be on guard carrying a shopping bag with fruits, bread or other edibles monkeys fancy. We don't have such menace in our place in Chennai, where we moved in recently. But I do, at times, miss the antics of our Mysore monkeys.

A look-in

This guy looks in through our car window hoping for some eats. Stray cows are not an uncommon sight in our part of the world. They are accustomed to being fed by residents as they work the street - with kitchen waste, bread crumbs, left-over dinner, fruits, vegetable, anything edible.
We met this cow at the parking lot near Chamundi Temple , Mysore. She apparently had no luck with the car parked next to ours, with closed window.

Caged

You wouldn't feel comfortable if such animal is held anywhere other than in a cage. The tiger here, they said, had seen action in Hollywood movies. This place we went to is a ranch near Salinas CA (Steinbeck country). The ranch has bed/breakfast accommodation for animal lover tourists , and a spacious enclosures for animals and birds trained to face the camera and hired for filming to movie/TV producers.

Horse and the cart driver appear to be dozing in the morning breeze.The boy, woken up by my movement to take this photo, said he helped his dad before school hours. He was waiting for a fare when I ran into him on JLB Road, Mysore

My Sunday morning mood made me a bit too lazy to work on four different photo posts. So thought of this sunrise shot that can do for Straight out of the Camera, Scenic Sunday, Shadow Shot and Camera Critters (you would sight a bird high up in the sky, if you look for it closely).

Cows coming home

Took these shots at dusk near Chamarajanagar, Karnataka. Cows are coming home after a day out grazing by the lakeside. We were on way from Coimbatore to Mysore.

Temple elephant

Most temples in southern India have an elephant in residence. Elephants are the preferred animals that are designated to lead ceremonial processions around temples or carry the presiding deity on such processions. Pilgrims at Thirukadaiyur seek the blessings of the temple elephant.

Balmy morning sun on a windless day is conducive to a snooze, on the steps of the Crawford Hall, housing the office of Vice-chancellor of Mysore University.

Holy cow

Yellow isn't their natural colour. They were smeared with turmeric paste and given a wash on Sankaranthi day, a Hindu festive occasion when cows are worshiped . I found these animals roaming my neighbourhood in Mysore.
