T for thatched roof

Thatched roof provides shelter to fishermen working,  or just lounging, on the beach under mid-day sun. When temperature gets close to 100 F (which is normal in Chennai nowadays), it can get unbearably hot on the waterfront at Kovalam,  a fishermen's hamlet.

  3. Thatched roofs are beautiful. We have them here also in the Netherlands! Good T word!

  4. Another great T-word and excellent photo too! My grandfather was a fisherman, but he worked the Labrador Coast, so a thatched roof wouldn't have been as practical as the one in your photo.

  6. A thatched roof completes that tropical and laid back aura in beaches or other bodies of water. Also, this type of roof serves as a cool shelter from the scorching heat, and does not require a lot of maintenance as compared with other roof types. A great bonus that comes with this roof is, it is environment-friendly.

  7. Precisely, Joanne! Thatched roofing is used for lots of projects such as poolside cabanas and huts. It is relatively inexpensive, which means extra savings for business owners. However, one should keep in mind that the very top part of the roof should be the thickest part because it is the weakest and most leak-prone area.

  8. It’s dangerous for the skin to stay under the sun for very long, so having a shade to rest under is really important especially. Thatched roofing or thatching is the manner of using dry vegetation to build a roof such as, straw water reed or sedge. Layering it makes it stronger and prevents water from going inside. It has been passed along by different generations which originated in England.

  9. @Mary: A thatched roof is the perfect shade during sunny days. As you’ll notice when you come to the beach, every hut and cottage has a thatched roof. It is the perfect spot for you to relax and chitchat with your pals. If you're tired of swimming or walking around the beach, you can just stay there and rest.

  10. You’re right Willene! The fact that thatched roofs are made of natural material, like straw or grass, is enough reason to consider a thatched hut as a good provider of refreshing shade. =)

  11. I personally love seeing thatched roofs. In fact, even if I’m not yet seated down at a thatched roof cottage at the beach, just seeing one is already relaxing! Haha! What more if I get there, right? That’d be really awesome! :D
