Temple elephant

Most temples in southern India have an elephant in residence. Elephants are the preferred animals that are designated to lead ceremonial processions around temples or carry the presiding deity on such processions. Pilgrims at Thirukadaiyur seek the blessings of the temple elephant.

  2. I saw a couple of elephants in the temple of Dharmasthala in Dakshina Kannada, and watched some devotees seeking blessings by the touch of the trunk to their head!
